A major milestone has been recorded in Ghana’s mining industry as the Damang mining site transitions into Ghanaian hands, with the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Issah Salifu Taylor, hailing the development as a turning point for local participation in the extractive sector.
In a statement, Hon. Taylor congratulated renowned businessman Ibrahim Mahama and his company, Engineers and Planners, for successfully taking over operations at the Damang mine. He described the transition as “the dawn of a new chapter” in Ghana’s quest to assert greater control over its natural resources.
According to the MP, the takeover represents more than a corporate acquisition—it is a symbol of Ghanaian capability, resilience, and strategic vision. He emphasized that empowering local companies to manage key national assets is essential for sustainable economic growth and long-term national development.
Drawing on his nearly three decades of experience in the mining sector, Hon. Taylor expressed strong confidence in the technical expertise and operational strength of Engineers and Planners. He noted that the company’s longstanding involvement at the Damang site, having operated there as subcontractors for years, gives them a unique advantage to enhance efficiency and ensure responsible mining practices.
“Engineers and Planners have proven themselves as a formidable force, not only in Ghana but across Africa. With their vast human and technological resources, I have no doubt they will transform the Damang site into a model of excellence,” he stated.
The MP also acknowledged the role played by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who initiated the takeover process in 2022, and commended the current administration for following through to completion. He further praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his consistent advocacy for increased Ghanaian ownership of the country’s mineral resources.
Hon. Taylor extended appreciation to the chiefs and youth of Damang for their cooperation, which he said ensured a smooth and peaceful transition process.
He also urged Dr. Mahama to leverage the rich pool of skilled mining professionals within the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency, highlighting the area’s long-standing contribution to Ghana’s mining workforce. He assured that the constituency remains ready to provide the necessary human resource support to ensure the success of the project.
Looking ahead, Hon. Taylor reaffirmed his commitment to fostering strong collaboration between Engineers and Planners and local communities. He stressed the importance of mutual respect, transparency, and continuous engagement in building a thriving and inclusive mining environment.
“This achievement is not just a corporate success; it is a national victory. It reflects what we can accomplish when Ghanaian ingenuity, leadership, and determination are given the opportunity to lead,” he concluded.
The Damang takeover is widely seen as a bold step toward increasing local ownership in Ghana’s extractive sector, setting a precedent for future resource management and reinforcing the country’s drive toward economic self-reliance.
