Legal activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has announced that Abu Trica and two others have been discharged by the Gbese District Court.

In a post shared after the court session, he said, “Just finished at the Gbese District Court. Abu Trica and two others have been discharged. NACOC just tried to rearrest them inside the courtroom. The judge was offended.”

According to him, the attempt to rearrest the suspects happened moments after the court’s decision, causing tension in the courtroom.

In a related development, his lead lawyer had previously explained that the court had earlier dealt with a key legal issue about jurisdiction. This was after he was denied bail during his first court appearance.

“The preliminary legal objection was about which court should hear the application, based on territorial jurisdiction,” the lawyer said. “The court confirmed it is properly seized of the matter and vacated the objection.”

He added that the case is not yet at the stage where the substance of the extradition request will be examined.

“We will return on January 13, 2026, for the court to consider the formal application on jurisdiction before any examination of the merits,” he stated.

Kumi was arrested on December 11, 2025, in a joint operation involving Ghanaian law enforcement and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He is accused of leading an online romance fraud scheme that allegedly targeted elderly victims in the United States and caused millions of dollars in losses.

According to court documents, a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio has indicted him on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors claim he coordinated the scheme and laundered the proceeds.
