An ambitious decongestion exercise undertaken by the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly in November 2025 has inadvertently led to a significant deterioration of sanitation at the Tarkwa main station. The initiative, aimed at clearing market women and traders from roadside selling points, Backstage Convo has seen the area transform into an unsightly and unhygienic refuse dump.

Initially, this Exercise hailed as a move to improve order and pedestrian safety, the comprehensive exercise successfully relocated traders who had previously occupied major access route.
However, just months after their removal, the vacated spaces at the tarkwa main station have become a repository for refuse, undermining the very goal of improved municipal sanitation.

The emergence of a refuse dump in such a central and public location raises serious concerns about public health, environmental degradation, and the long-term effectiveness of urban planning efforts.
This unforeseen consequence highlights the need for a holistic approach to municipal assembly and the municipal environmental director, ensuring that decongestion efforts are coupled with strong waste management strategies to prevent new problems from arising.
