The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to formally brief President John Dramani Mahama on the status of mediation efforts in the long-standing Bawku conflict, as the government intensifies moves to secure lasting peace in the area.
The report, expected to be presented on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, will highlight progress made so far, challenges encountered and recommendations to guide the next phase of state intervention in the conflict-prone municipality.
President Mahama appointed the Asantehene earlier in 2025 to spearhead mediation aimed at resolving the decades-old chieftaincy dispute that has fueled recurring violence in Bawku.
The peace process commenced in April with separate consultations between Otumfuo and representatives of the rival factions as part of confidence-building efforts.
Although discussions were temporarily halted, the mediation resumed in May 2025 and has since contributed to a period of relative calm in the municipality.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces say they have stepped up security operations in Bawku to ensure law and order.
The military maintains that the combination of dialogue and heightened security presence will help curb violence and restore stability.
Speaking on Monday, December 15, the Commander of the 11th Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces in the Upper East Region, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Boako, expressed optimism about the peace process.
“We believe that as time goes on, with our monitoring, time will catch up with those miscreants. With the Otumfuo mediation and the meetings we had with the factions in Bawku last week, we believe that all these attacks will come to an end so that the community and its people can return to normalcy,” he citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.
Bawku has witnessed intermittent unrest over the years as a result of chieftaincy disputes, leading to repeated calls for sustained dialogue, effective mediation and stronger security measures to ensure enduring peace.
