The Ghana Police Service has recovered more than 100 tonnes of stolen service cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) during a major operation in Tema, leading to the arrest of 10 suspects.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, announced the development during a press briefing on Monday, March 9, 2026. She described the operation as a significant step in the fight against the theft and vandalism of critical national infrastructure.
According to the CID boss, the operation was carried out on March 4, 2026, at about 3:30 pm by the CID Headquarters Operations Unit in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Energy (Ghana).
Acting on intelligence, the team stormed the premises of a firm identified as Central Company, located in the Kpone Industrial Area near Tema.
Upon arrival, officers discovered approximately 70 workers actively cutting ECG service cables and stripping off the insulation to extract the metal components. The exposed wires were then being compressed into metal blocks, which investigators suspect were being prepared for export.
Police say investigations are ongoing as authorities work to clamp down on illegal activities targeting the country’s power infrastructure.
