The Gyaasehene for the Apinto Divisional Area in Tarkwa Nsuaem, Nana Dr Adarkwa Bediakoh III, has called for mining communities to be actively involved in negotiations concerning mining license renewals and future agreements involving Gold Fields.
Speaking on issues surrounding mining and development in Tarkwa, Nana Dr Adarkwa Bediakoh III stressed that it is only fair for traditional authorities and local communities to be part of discussions that determine the future operations of mining companies in the area.
According to him, decisions on whether Gold Fields should continue operating or be granted another 30-year mining lease should not be made without involving the people directly affected by mining activities.
“It is just fair for us to be included in the licensing process, whether or not Gold Fields should continue, whether they should get another 30 years or not. I think it will be fair for us to be part of that negotiation,” he stated.
He explained that involving traditional leaders (Nananom) in such negotiations would give the community an opportunity to voice their concerns and also identify priority development projects needed within the municipality.
Nana Dr Adarkwa Bediakoh III further noted that mining communities should have the chance to contribute to conversations on environmental protection, infrastructure development, and the general welfare of residents affected by mining operations.
According to him, local participation in mining-related decisions could help ensure that the wealth generated from natural resources translates into visible development for communities like Tarkwa and its surrounding areas.
