Kwesi Appiah declares Sudan’s AFCON title ambition after historic victory

Sudan’s Ghanaian coach, Kwesi Appiah, has boldly declared his team’s ambition to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after leading them to their first tournament victory in 13 years.

A 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea, secured by a 74th-minute own goal from Saul Coco, has reignited Sudan’s campaign and given them a clear path to the knockout stages.

In a confident post-match statement, Appiah emphasised that the historic win was merely a stepping stone toward a much larger goal. “I am happy with the win, but our ambition is to win the title, not just to achieve a single victory,” he asserted.

The former Ghana coach highlighted the critical role of his squad’s experience in navigating the challenging match. “We have experienced players and their performance was strong. We faced some difficulties, but we always try to show good quality in our matches to achieve victories,” Appiah said, also thanking the fans for their support.

Appiah made it clear that Sudan is in Morocco to compete, not just make up the numbers. “When you take part in any tournament, the main ambition is to get through the group stage and go as far as possible… We are not here to just participate.”

The result sets up a decisive final Group E match against Burkina Faso on Wednesday, December 31. Sudan now needs just a single point to secure a historic place in the round of 16, turning their coach’s ambitious words into a tangible possibility.
