Chairperson of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Shaibu Mahama, says the proposed 24-Hour Economy Authority will not duplicate the work of existing state institutions.
In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor, he addressed claims that the authority would repeat the roles of agencies like GIPC and the Ministry of Trade.
“You need an agency to coordinate all these institutions,” he said.
He explained that while ministries already handle agriculture, trade, and exports, there is no single body coordinating their efforts.
“We can go to Agriculture, we can go to GIPC, we can go to Exim Bank, but who brings them together?” he asked.
According to him, the authority will serve as a central hub linking production, manufacturing, and exports.
“This bill creates a coordinating point for all these sectors,” he noted.
He stressed that the authority is different because it focuses on private sector-driven initiatives.
“This is not the usual ministerial approach. It is private sector-led,” he said.
Mr Mahama added that without coordination, development efforts remain fragmented and ineffective.
