Chairperson of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Shaibu Mahama has defended the 24-hour Economy Bill, describing it as a tool for job creation and economic restructuring.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor, he said the policy is aimed at correcting long-standing defects in Ghana’s production and supply systems.

“Our GDP has grown from about two billion dollars to over 80 billion dollars, but employment has not matched that growth,” he said.

According to him, weak production, marketing, and supply chains have made local products expensive and uncompetitive.

“So when you fix production, fix supply chains, and fix marketing, you automatically create jobs, direct and indirect,” he explained.

He added that the policy is anchored on private sector leadership, with government only providing support where necessary.

“This is private sector-led. Government only provides the viability funding gap,” he stated.

Mr Mahama said the bill merely gives legal backing to an existing policy, making it more credible and sustainable.

“It is about giving the programme a legal foundation,” he said.
