The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has condemned in strong terms an attack on teachers by some WASSCE candidates at Kade in the Eastern Region.

GNAT said the incident took place at night shortly after the release of the WASSCE results.

The candidates allegedly accused the teachers of being responsible for their poor performance, claiming they were denied the chance to engage in examination malpractices.

Speaking to TV3, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah said the safety of teachers must be a top priority. He advised teachers to remove themselves from any situation where they feel their lives are under threat.

“Teachers, wherever you are, if your life is threatened, you are allowed to leave. Just inform the appropriate persons and leave. The Labour Law allows that, and we urge our members to vacate the premises whenever they feel their lives are in danger,” he stated.

Thomas Tanko Musah also issued a warning to the presidential candidate of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, urging her to refrain from making comments he described as inflammatory against teachers following the mass failure recorded in the WASSCE.

“People like Janet Nabla must be careful with their statements and stop attacking teachers. If this continues, we will respond appropriately. It is wrong to incite the public against teachers. If you have nothing constructive to say, remain quiet and stop attacking teachers,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Chapter of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has also called for immediate investigations and decisive action against a group of students from Kade Senior High School who allegedly assaulted a teacher outside the school premises.

Eastern Regional NAGRAT Chairman, Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, stressed that the law must be applied to the students involved to serve as a warning to others.
