Huniso Queen Mother Appeals for Extension of Gold Fields Mining Lease

The Queen Mother of the Huniso Community, Obaahemaa Yaa Damoah, has passionately appealed to the Government of Ghana to extend the mining lease of Gold Fields Ghana, citing the company’s significant contributions to the development of Huniso and surrounding communities over the past 30 years.

Speaking on behalf of the people of Apinto and Huniso, the Queen Mother emphasized that although the communities still expect more support and development from the mining company, it is important to acknowledge the positive impact Gold Fields Ghana has made throughout its operations.

“We, the people of Apinto and Huniso, cannot overlook the numerous developmental projects undertaken by Gold Fields during its 30 years of operations. The company has made significant contributions to the growth and development of our communities through various initiatives and investments. While there is still much more we expect from them, it is only fair to acknowledge and appreciate the impact they have made over the years,” she stated.

Obaahemaa Yaa Damoah highlighted several major projects undertaken by Gold Fields Ghana in the Huniso community. According to her, the company constructed a school to improve access to education for children in the area and also built a CHPS compound facility to strengthen healthcare delivery within the community.

She further noted that Gold Fields played a key role in constructing the Samahu to Huniso road, which has greatly improved transportation and accessibility for residents and commuters. In addition, the company established a community centre for the people of Huniso, which has served the community for many years.

Although parts of the community centre are currently facing minor damages, the Queen Mother disclosed that Gold Fields Ghana has assured the community that repair works will soon be carried out to restore the facility.

Another major contribution mentioned by the Queen Mother was employment opportunities created for the youth in Huniso. She explained that many young people within the community have gained jobs and livelihoods through the company’s operations, helping to improve living standards for several families.

Based on these contributions, Obaahemaa Yaa Damoah appealed to the government to consider extending Gold Fields Ghana’s lease to continue its mining operations and developmental support in the area.

She expressed hope that continued collaboration between the government, the mining company, and the local communities would bring even more growth and opportunities to Huniso and its neighboring communities in the years ahead.
