The Director of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Alexander Kwaku Obeng, has announced a new digital enforcement system that will allow drivers to present only their licence numbers during police checks instead of carrying their physical licences.
Speaking in an interview sighted by backstage convo on Monday, March 16, 2026, the chief superintendent explained that the initiative is aimed at reducing direct contact between motorists and police officers while promoting transparency and improved compliance with road traffic regulations.
According to him, under the new arrangement, drivers will only be required to provide their driver’s licence number when requested by police officers.

“A person driving a motor vehicle who is required to produce a driver’s licence shall simply provide the licence number. You don’t necessarily need to carry the physical licence anymore,” he explained.
He added that motorists can keep their licence numbers in various ways, including on their mobile phones, written on a piece of paper, in their wallets, or anywhere convenient inside the vehicle.
Chief Superintendent Obeng further disclosed that the department has introduced a technology-driven traffic monitoring system known as Trafitec GH, designed to strengthen enforcement of traffic laws and reduce road traffic offences nationwide.
He noted that the system relies on modern surveillance technology, including cameras mounted on police vehicles, traffic poles, and tripods, enabling officers to monitor motorists more effectively.
The initiative, he said, is part of broader efforts by the MTTD to leverage information and communication technology (ICT) to improve road safety and ensure motorists comply with traffic regulations across the country.
